Retrospect. In retrospect it is hard to understand how the siege could last for so long. Perhaps it had to do with the people involved as leaders. Piet Cronje and Snyman. One should have thought that Piet Cronje would have remembered the war of 1881. But Piet Cronje did not, and was a poor leader. But even worse was Snyman. He lacked of initiative, was unwilling to follow suggestion from the people under him or orders from above. Baden Powell. Baden Powell was brought in surely for his ability to bluff and in that he succeeded well by making the Boers believe that the garrison in town was much bigger than it really was.
