During the New Year weekend of 1895/6 the fiasco of the Jameson Raid took place- Three hundred and fifty police and volunteers left Pitsane Potlogo, 50 km north of Mafeking, where they had been encamped for some time under Dr Jameson, and crossed the Transvaal border. They were joined at Ottoshoop by 120 men from the recently disbanded Bechuanaland Border Police who had been stationed at Mafikeng. Jameson started without the approval of Rhodes or his collaborators in Johannesburg and his movements were known lo the Transvaal authorities from the time the force left Ottoshoop. He was finally forced to surrender near Randfontein to commandant Piet Cronje,
