Before the South African War nobody knew of this town, but after the Siege of Mafeking, it's name became a legend, even part of the English language. See the location of Mafikeng on the South-African Map. It has been called by different names, ranging from a Victorian legend, a White man's war but it is the Womb of the new South Africa.

The siege of Mafeking lasted for seven months. It had kept Cronje and thousands of men immobilized in the beginning of the war and continued to do so. The loss or survival of Mafeking in the middle of nowhere was of no real importance to the war. Diaries were kept with great accuracy and war correspondents kept themselves busy by writing long reports.
