| A new era for the city opened with the death of Malatesta Baglioni in
1437, at the age of 47. Perugia, that independent city, was faced, almost certainly, with
the loss of her liberty. |
| Under the Baglioni the communal government may have
weakened, but these nobles showed themselves to be an efficient substitute against outside
interference especially the papal ones. Now the city was leaderless, and now it had to
cope with the redoubtable Farnese Pope Paul III. |
