research on grandfathers family in the ukraine

I am looking for any info anyone can help me with about my late grandfather.
He was born somewhere in the ukraine in 1925 october 27th.
His name was wolodumuir pidkawaru.
He was taken by the germans along with his three or two older brothers.
He no longer knew what happened to them after that day.
I know that he was a sniper and somehow escaped to the uk and was then captured i think in ely cambridgeshire.
where i am.
I managed to get a copy of his death certificate but it just told me birthplace ukraine.
But an old relative seems to think he was from czechoslovakia.
i would appreciate any info at all.
