Gas chambers were thought of as shower rooms for some. Jews were led to believe that they were going to take a much needed shower. They were led in herds into these so-called shower rooms. Unfortunately, there was no plan for them to take showers. Instead, gas was pumped into the room as hundreds, sometimes thousands of Jews died from suffocation. I can't even begin to imagine the panic that would occur with that number of people in such a small area.
Bigger gas chambers were desperately needed for higher extermination rates. Small gas chambers would cause chaotic conditions among German soldiers and the Jews. The larger gas chambers were concrete based with chambers about 1 meter above the ground. A long corridor led to the chamber, which was barely big enough for one body to pass through at a time. Inside was a removable door that was used to dispose of gassed bodies. Outside the chamber was a shed that held the gas machine.
Gas chambers were a very sad way to die. You're in a enclosed area with hundreds of other victims and suddenly gas floats into the room. The coughing and gagging notion is the first feeling you experience. You hope it will stop, but it doesn't. That is something I never want to experience. Hopefully, no one will ever have to experience that type of feeling ever.
