The Holocaust is a sad reminder of how cruel and punishable a person can be towards human nature. Many know that Hitler was the reason for more than 6 million Jew's death. But what was done with all those bodies? Mass graves, or incineration?
Hundreds of thousands of Jews layed murdered in graves. Inproper burial is the keyword. These Jews weren't buried alone, but along with thousands of their comrades. The graves were then filled with dirt, and traces of their existence were only a memory. Mass graves were a harsh and temporary way to dispose of corpses, but Hittler needed a better way. He soon figured out that the incineration of corpses was the best way to coverup human life loss.
Hitler needed to coverup bodies that his army killed, so he started incineration camps. The first camps to start incinerating bodies were the camps of Sobibor and Belzec. Hitler also called for graves in Russia of murdered prisoners and Jews to be exhumed. The exhumed bodies were to be incinerated. The same was to be done with the bodies of all Jews at extermination camps.
Ways to burn bodies were being seeked. They would drop bodies in ditches and bomb them, or exhume mass graves and incinerate the corpses. Some corpses were introduced to open fires almost immediately after they were killed. One way to dispose of dead bodies was to place bodies on a railway and set fire underneath. Several Germans had to sweep regularly underneath these railways because of all the human ash.
Corpses were burned regularly without hesitation. Up to 2,000 bodies were burned in a 24 hour period. About 500,000 corpses were burned during a total of 6 months.
The burnings continued day after day. Sometimes bones would be the only remaining evidence that the person existed. The remaining bone was pounded until it became a fine dust. There was a problem with disposing of the ash and bone, however, so Germans had to think of new ways to dispose of these objects. They finally decided to dig trenches and dump the ash and bone deep into the ground. The top layer of ground would be garbage and soil.
The coverup of the dead bodies of the Holocaust is a sad reminder of how cruel and inhumane a person can be. Everybody says history repeats itself. I hope to God it doesn't in this case.
