SCHOOL PROFILE
Vandenberg Middle School (VMS) educates students living on Vandenberg Air
Force Base, Vandenberg Village, Mission Hills, the United States Prison
Property and parts of Lompoc. Our enrollment is approximately 1050 students
with about 1000 students bussed to school. The instructional program at
VMS stresses access to the core curriculum for all of our students. The
curriculum is appropriately aligned with State frameworks and model curriculum
guides. VMS also helps prepare students for college offering courses in
French, Spanish, Math I, and Science. We have two computer and two technology
labs that provide a myriad of opportunities for students to learn basic
and technological skills. One of the labs, a twenty-nine station Macintosh
Computer Lab, emphasizes computer assisted drafting. Additionally, we have
many opportunities for students to be involved in activities such as Associated
Student Body (ASB), Senate, House of Representatives, Band, Future Homemakers
of America (FHA), assorted noon clubs and sports, the yearbook, the school
newspaper, Reflections, and California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF).
An activities director plans and facilitates noon music and sports, dances,
fundraisers, and other assorted activities that increase student involvement
and awareness.
SCHOOL FACILITIES AND SAFETY
Vandenberg Middle School is a well maintained educational facility with
48 classrooms and 11 specialized areas to accommodate the physical education
program and a number of exploratory and specialized courses. Included in
the specialized courses are the Santa Barbara County Center for Therapeutic
Education classroom, an opportunity class, and an adjustment center. A major
focus at VMS is a safe and orderly school environment. To that end we have
proactively sought to reduce unacceptable behaviors on campus. At the beginning
of each year, we have an expectations assembly where we discuss proper and
acceptable behavior on campus with all students. We have instituted a conflict
resolution program that allows students to work through their conflicts
with trained peers. We have the services of a CODE and a DARE officer, a
disaster committee that deals with disaster readiness, and a discipline
committee made up of parents, students, and teachers that meet to discuss
discipline concerns.
