High School is more than just books and homework! Cabrillo High School offers a wide variety of student organizations in which students can get involved. These clubs sponsor all of the dances, assemblies, fund raisers, and other events that help make Cabrillo a fun and exciting place to attend school. The following information provides a glimpse into each organization and its many activities.
AQUARIUM CLUB
There's always something going on in the aquarium room, whether it's giving tours, taking care of the fish, or adding to the aquarium. This club meets at lunch and after school. Besides taking care of tanks, they sponsor activities during the year.
ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY (ASB)
ASB is the elected and appointed members of the student government. The elections are held in February for the upcoming school year. You don't have to be elected to be in ASB, for there are also appointed jobs. ASB loves all the support it can get! ASB sponsors many activities on campus such as spirit days, dances, fund raisers, pep assemblies, music on the patio, the Student Store, and much more. Meetings are held at 6:45 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. Credit is received for this class.
CABRILLO BUSINESS COMPUTER CLUB
This club meets at lunch and is for those students interested in having fun with computers. There is a $10.00 annual membership fee.
CABRILLO SPIRIT CLUB
The Spirit Club is comprised of Cabrillo students who help promote school spirit on and off the campus by providing support for the cheerleaders at athletic events and assemblies. By sponsoring car rallies to athletic events, spirit day competitions, spirit poster decorating, and fund raising projects, the club members encourage many students to get involved in a wide variety of school activities. Membership is open to all Cabrillo students any time during the school year.
CONQS FOR CHRIST
Conqs for Christ is a non-denominational Christian club aimed to lift up the name of Jesus Christ. All students are welcome and encouraged to attend meetings every Thursday and prayer meetings on every Monday and Friday. CFC's activities include Bible studies, prayer, singing, pizza parties, and guest speakers. No dues are required.
KEY CLUB
Key Club is affiliated with Kiwanis International. This club helps the community through its service work. Members decorate the convalescent hospital, sponsor a canned food drive, volunteer as Salvation Army bell ringers during the holidays, work with Special Olympics, conduct an Alumni Tea during Homecoming Week, and attend a District Spring Conference. Key Club meets at lunchtime about twice a month.
THE SCHOOL MUSICAL
The school musical is a winter production. Tryouts are usually in November, and practice is held every day after school for several months. Even if you don't want to recite lines, there is always backstage work to be done. The show is put on the last weekend in February and the first weekend in March. You must be in Choir to be in the musical.
SCIENCE / MATH CLUB
This club meets at lunch to work on science and / or math problems. They go to math contests at colleges, Cal Math League, nature conservatories, industrial centers, and amusement parks. Students can join this club during the school year.
SPANISH CLUB
This club stays busy with in-and-out-of-school activities. They meet weekly during lunchtime. The activities of this club include selling pizza every Friday at lunch, having monthly potlucks, attending numerous plays, musical events, and tours of missions. They also sponsor the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration.
STUDENTS AGAINST DRIVING DRUNK (SADD)
This club was organized to reach out, encourage, and assist students about the dangers and the potential consequences of under-age drinking and drug use. The activities include: Red Ribbon Week, safe driving and seat belt awareness, and the DARE program with elementary schools. They meet during lunch time. The club is open to all students grades 9 - 12.
TIERRA ROYAL YEARBOOK
Called Yearbook Production, this organization is an elective class for credit for tenth through twelfth graders (and ninth graders with very strong references). Members of this class create a record of the whole year and learn how to publish it in book form. If you have skill in interviewing and writing, keyboarding, computers, photography or art, you will be able to build on these skills like never before. You need to be inventive and reliable, conscientious about deadlines, and able to accept responsibility. Applications are available in February and must be completed before pre-registration for the fall semester.
CALILFORNIA SCHOLARSHIP FEDERATION (CSF)
This club meets at noon monthly. To be eligible to join you must earn a 3.5 GPA or better and sign up before the publicized deadline. CSF sponsors concession stands at games, a life membership dinner in the spring, a visit to a college, CSF trip to Disneyland, Senior Awards, and Alumni Day.
CHEERLEADER
Cheerleaders promote spirit throughout the year, hold weekly meetings at lunch, and practice after school. Tryouts are in the spring of the previous year. But, that doesn't mean that you can't help the CHS cheerleaders cheer the Conqs on! This group attends a summer camp, does community service, holds a fund raiser, makes posters, competes in the Magic Mountain spirit competition and, of course, cheers at the games.
CHOIR
The Vocal Music Department has a place for anyone who loves music: Concert Choir for grades 10 - 12 and Freshmen Choir for 9th graders. The organization does fund raisers, goes to competition in the spring, and puts on local shows. It is also a class for credit.
COLOR GUARD
Color Guard is a performing organization that entertains at pep assemblies, football games, and competition events. Try-outs are in the spring of the previous year and practice is daily.
DRAMA CLUB
This club is a charter member of the International Thespian Association. During the course of the school year, two full-length plays are chosen, rehearsed, and presented. The club meets during lunch and sells nachos as a fund raiser. They invite all students who are interested in any aspect of drama to join Drama Club.
FORE-AND AFT
Offered through registration, Journalism I and II is the class that publishes several issues of the school paper throughout the year. The requirements for staff members are to be responsible and dependable, and to have the capabilities to write news copy and take pictures.
FRENCH CLUB
Any student interested in the French language, France, or the people and their customs is invited to join. The club usually meets on Tuesdays during lunch. They have fund raising events to raise money for films, speakers, and meals.
THE FRIENDS FOREVER CLUB
The Friends Forever Club is designed to establish a special relationship with handicapped students by participating in lunch fellowships and other related activities. The club also meets with Foreign Exchange Students to help them find their way around campus, socialize and establish Pen Pal relationships.
FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA (FHA - HERO)
Home Economics Related Occupations is a national vocational education student organization for home economics students. Any student who is taking, has taken a course, or is interested in learning more about home economics and related occupations is eligible for membership. Dues are $5.00.
FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA (FBLA)
This is a club that requires enrollment in one of the many business classes. It meets at lunchtime, and you may join the club in the fall of the school year.
GERMAN CLUB
The German Club meets on Wednesdays at lunch. This club promotes the learning of the German culture by going on special trips and participating in special school functions like the Homecoming Parade. The also help host German students who visit Cabrillo every spring. German Club is open to all students who are interested in the German language and customs.
INTERACT CLUB
Interact Club is affiliated with the Rotary International. This group is for students who would like to help the community while having fun. The club meets at lunch once a month. Interact usually sponsors a dance, candy sales, and a canned food drive. It also helps with the Great American Smoke Out, assists the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department with candy sales, holds a Christmas party, and attends the spring conference for all District Interact members.
DESIGN ASSOCIATION CLUB
This club is for students interested in graphic arts and design. Field trips include touring printing and designing businesses. Some members attended the Gutenberg Print Festival in Anaheim this past year.
ENVIRONMENTAL SOCIAL POLITICAL CLUB
Open to all students, this club works for social improvement and provides help for the environment by the way of beach cleanups.
TELECOMMUNICATIONS CLUB Open to all students, this club meets daily at lunchtime and utilizes various computer systems for networking, CD ROM games, and socializing. Fund raising takes on a variety of forms to meet the costs of maintaining on line services and acquiring new software. There are no dues charged.
ATHLETIC CLUBS All of Cabrillo's sports teams have clubs that engage in a variety of activities throughout the school year and summer. No dues are charged, but depending on what sport you are interested in and at what level (junior varsity or varsity), you may be required to assist with some form of fundraising.
