Department of Fish and Game
The Department of Fish & Game is one of our outstanding partnerships.
Because of the very tight regulations and the stringent demands placed on
certification of any requests made to them we realized developing a fish
hatchery would take time. We needed to develop credibility over a two-year
period that would help F&G better understand our goals for using the
Cabrillo High School Aquarium as a means of educating our students and community
about the St.Ynez watershed that flows into the Pacific Ocean at Vandenberg
Air Force Base.
Matt Church, a junior at Cabrillo High, through Paul Cleveland, manager
of the Salmon Enhancement Program, Port San Luis, was able to obtain rainbow
trout eggs. Matt placed the eggs in his newly developed fish hatchery and
proceeded to monitor their growth and development.
The ultimate thrill was when Matt was able to place 7 of his tagged rainbow
trout in a local pond. Five of the seven were successfully caught by anglers
in the Elks Fish Derby held for the local special needs population.
