In the 1800's luminous electrical discharges in rarefied gases had been observed, but nobody really took too much notice of the phenomenon, until 1838, Michael Faraday gave the first precise descriptions of the effects that occurred and noted a dark space between the glowing negative electrode and the main bulk of the discharge. Did you get that? Neither did we so....

In clear understandable terms, Michael studied electric explosions that created light in gasses that then were rare, he also saw some dark space in between the negative electrodes and the main explosion. He remarked the significance of the difference between negative and positive electricity, but not much work was done until the invention of a mercurial air pump, that made low pressure investigations simpler.
