The Vietnam War: Summary

The Vietnam War is the military struggle fought in Vietnam between 1959 to 1975. Communist Guerrillas or the Vietcong in the South, who are supported by Communist North Vietnam, attempted to overthrow the government of South Vietnam. This eventually became an international conflict between major powers of the world. In the case of South Vietnam, United States and 40 other countries kept supplying South Vietnam with troops and ammunitions while USSR (Russia) and the People's Republic of China gave North Vietnam as well as the Vietcong (Guerrillas in South Vietnam) ammunitions to fight the war.

Statistics are that the first US troops to serve the country, the Marines started with 27,000. By the end of the year 1965 (the year USA sent troops into Vietnam), the figures rose to 200,000 troops and at the end of the war when US withdrew from Vietnam, the amounted to 541,000.
