Islam is the third great monotheistic faith. At the end of the 20th century, it claimed about one billion adherents around the world, with the figure varying according to the source. These adherents are called Muslims, and they dominate the population in all the Middle Eastern countries except Israel. Muslims are also found in other parts of Asia, Africa and, to a certain extent, in Europe and in the United States.

The emergence of Islam can be traced to the mission of the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century. Born in Mecca, Muhammad at he began to perceive a powerful force in his life. He concluded after a series of mystical experiences that he had been summoned to proclaim the word of his supreme and single god: Allah.

Muhammad's initial vision is said to have occurred around the year 610 in a cave near Mecca, where the angel Gabriel(Jibril) appeared to him and told him to "recite". Muslims acknowledge the The Qur'an ("recitation") as the actual words revealed to Muhammad by Allah. This text is the holy scripture of Islam.

Five articles of faith are contained within the Muslim Creed:

1) Belief in a single god
2) Belief in angels
3) Belief in the revealed books
4) Belief in the prophets
5) Belief in the Judgement Day
