| Rainforests are perhaps the most endangered habitat on earth. Each
year, some 140,000 sq. km. of rainforests are being destroyed. Rainforests are being
felled for timber by logging companies and cleared by people for farming. The most
endangered rainforests are those in West Africa, where human populations are doubling
every 20 years, and in Central America and South-East Asia. Although large areas of rainforest remain in Central Africa and South America, they, too, are vanishing at an alarming rate. Time is short if we are to save the remaining rainforests for future genrations. In view of the increasing and rapid rate of forest exploitation, there has been growing concern of various interest groups about the loss and conservation of the tropical rainforest. There are various different grounds for concern and conservation. WWF is committed to
conserving the world's rainforests, not only for the incredible wealth of plants and
animals that live in them, but for the benefit of the indigenous peoples who live in them.
