Improving the short-term memory
By improving memory we have to make a distinction between improving the short-term memory and the long-term memory. Improving the short-term memory is relatively easy, the only way we can increase the amount of information we can hold in short-term memory is to group items into more effective chunks. For example, dividing the combination 200119981999 in 2001, 1998, and 1999.

"There are several ways to improve memory function."
Improving the long-term memory
Long-term memory is different matter. There are several ways to improve the long-term memory:
  1. A recall for a word-pair improves greatly when the two words are connected by an image. This method is used in the following two methods.
  2. The second is called the system of loci (loci is Latin for places). This method works especially well with an ordered sequence of items. For example when you need materials to rebuild your house, you can order the words on your mental list by the order you enter them in the house. For example, when you need something for the front of the house, you put it 'at the top'. then you put something you need for the hall under it. Then for the stairs etc... Now you only have to remember what order you used.
  3. Imagery is also used in the key-word method of learning a foreign vocabulary. This method involves two steps. The first is to find a part of the foreign word that sounds like an English word. The next step is to find an image that connects the English word to the foreign word.
  4. Improving image also depends on the environment. When you learn physics always in the same room, the classroom. You will better be able to do the exam in the same room than to make it in a different room.
  5. You can also try to find a logical link between words when you have to remember them. Therefore you can learn better idiom if they are arranged by theme.
  6. Another way to improve retrieval is to practice it-that is asking yourself what you are learning. Suppose you have two hours to learn a text that can be read through in 30 minutes. It will not be effective to read the text four times. It will be more effective if you read the text one time, during that reading you select the difficult parts, and then later you return only to the parts that were difficult.
