A relative of Tyrannosaurus and
Megalosaurus, this Cretaceous dinosaur was a fearsome flesh eater. It was much smaller
than Tyrannosaurus and has not yet been attached to a known dinosaur family. It
probably belonged to a group of more than 15 similar dinosaurs.
Labocania had a much bigger head than Tyrannosaurus
and a much bigger body. In many other ways it was very similar to its bigger relative.
With enormous teeth and sharp claws on its toes, Labocania would have been a frightening
predator. Yet its weight, which averaged about 3 tons, probably slowed it down and allowed
it to be attacked by other flesh eaters.
Some scientists think it had a very thick skin,
which would have made it tough to kill. Only a few bones of Labocania have ever been
found. They were dug up in the La Bocana Roja rock formations in Baja California.
