(HAD-ruh-sawr-us) This was the first dinosaur from North
America to be named. Its bones were dug up in New Jersey, and in 1858 it was given a name
that means "different foot." This became the family name for a large group of
hadrosaurids. The family also included Edmontosaurus, which was much bigger and heavier
than hadrosaurus.
All duckbills had flat heads with solid bone crests
or humps on top. The shape and size of these features varied among different members of
the family. Hadrosaurus had a deep, narrow face. It had two rounded humps, one above each
eye socket.
Scientists have discovered fossil remains of
Hadrosaurus that date back 78 million years, making Hadrosaurus older than Edmontosaurus.
In fact, they were not very closely related. Both came from an unknown ancestor believed
to have been on earth more than 80 million years ago. Some scientists, however, think both
types were much older than this. They have found fossil footprints 120 million years old
that look just like those made by Hadrosaurus.
