(ed-MON-tuh-sawr-us) This dinosaur was one of the giants in the
large family of duckbill dinosaurs. It was as long as 43 feet and could weigh more than 3
tons. It belonged to the group of "bird-foot" families and appeared during the
late Cretaceous period, about 72 million years ago. Edmontosaurus were plentiful: they
were known to have lived all over the earth.
Edmontosaurus did not have a bony crest on top of
its head, as other duckbills did. Its skull was low in front and high at the back. It fed
on plants that needed to be chopped up before being swallowed. To do that
it had about a thousand teeth in its soft mouth. Scientists know quite a bit about this
dinosaur because they have found so many skeletons.
Some scientists think Edmontosaurus had flaps of
skin on each side of its nose. When it blew these up like balloons, they made a loud
bellowing sound. Like many other animals, dinosaurs probably used these loud noise to
communicate.
