Corythosaurus, whose name means "helmet lizard," had a large crest on top of its head. Corythosaurus belonged to the family of duckbill dinosaurs called hadrosaurids. Among other hadrosaurid members were Bactrosaurus, Lambeosaurus and Edmontosaurus.

corythosaurus-fossilised skin.gif (26604 bytes)Corythosaurus appeared after Bactrosaurus but just before Edmontosaurus. It was the only group of duckbills to have a crest on its head. The crest was hollow, narrow, and shaped like a dinner plate. Females and young had smaller crests than males.

Corythosaurus was probably used to feeding on small lizards, insects colonies, and plants. corythosaurus-hadrosaur ungual.gif (28832 bytes)It had a toothless beak with which it woyld scoop up its food. From fossil remains it seems to have been about 30 feet long and probably weighed around 3 tons. Its big, heavy tail would be useful for keeping it balanced while it stood on its back legs and slowly munched food.
