(ko-RITH-uh-sawr-us) Corythosaurus, whose name means "helmet
lizard," had a large crest on top of its head. Corythosaurus belonged to the family
of duckbill dinosaurs called hadrosaurids. Among other hadrosaurid members were
Bactrosaurus, Lambeosaurus and Edmontosaurus.
Corythosaurus appeared
after Bactrosaurus but just before Edmontosaurus. It was the only group of duckbills to
have a crest on its head. The crest was hollow, narrow, and shaped like a dinner plate.
Females and young had smaller crests than males.
Corythosaurus was probably used to feeding on small
lizards, insects colonies, and plants. It had a toothless
beak with which it woyld scoop up its food. From fossil remains it seems to have been
about 30 feet long and probably weighed around 3 tons. Its big, heavy tail would be useful
for keeping it balanced while it stood on its back legs and slowly munched food.
