(SEET-ee-o-sawr-us) This animal is one of the earliest
plant-eating dinosaurs discovered. It probably lived at about the same time Barapasaurus
roamed the earth. Cetiosaurus belonged to the same group of dinosaur as Diplodocus and
probably appeared around 190 million years ago.
Scientists can tell that it is an early type,
because its bones are not as well developed as other dinosaurs of its family. While others
had lightweight back bones, hollowed out to save weight, Cetiosaurus had solid back bones.
This observation helps scientists place Cetiosaurus several million years before
Diplodocus, Brachiosaurus, and other types.
Cetiosaurus looked a lot like Camarasaurus and had
a tail similar to Diplodocus. It was smaller than Camarasaurus and weighed about 10 tons.
Cetiosaurus may have wallowed in rivers and lakes. Scientists are not sure how to lived.
They think probably went down to the water to cool off and wash just like the hippopotamus
does today.
