| Brachiosaurus (BRAK-ee-uh-sawr-us) This dinosaur has a length of more than 75
feet. It is one of the biggest ever found. The first Brachiosaurus was discovered in 1900
at the Grand River Valley, Colorado.
When scientists put its bones together they
discovered that its front legs were much longer than its back legs. This is why they
called it Brachiosaurus, which means "arm lizard." All other dinosaurs had their
longest legs at the back. Brachiosaurus has a very long neck and a small head with little
teeth. Its back is strong and arched with a relatively short tail. Brachiosaurus was very
bulky and probably weighed more than 75 tons. It could have looked over the top of a
three-story building and probably munched vegetation from tall trees.
Some people used to think Brachiosaurus lived in
water, keeping only its long neck above the surface. Scientists now think it roamed around
on land. It may have had a long trunk from the two big nostrils on the top of its head. No
one knows for sure. Its been 130 million years since Brachiosaurus roamed the earth, and
only the bones survived.
