Anatosaurus (ah-nat-uh-sawr-us)
One of the last dinosaurs to
become extinct, Anatosaurus lived 65 million years ago. Anatosaurus was a duckbill
dinosaur and belonged to a family that had jaws shaped like a duck's beak. They were
called hadrosaurids and lived for more than 60 million years. Anatosaurus was a typical
hadrosaurid. It had up to 1,000 tiny teeth in its mouth for munching vegetation. Many
types of Hadrosaurids had a crest, each type shaped differently. Anatosaurus had no crest,
but had instead a smooth, rounded head. Anatosaurus had strong back legs and could
probably run very fast.
Anatosaurus was built to eat
plants, leaves, and small shrubs. One set of remains has been found with pine needles in
its stomach, along with seeds and fruit! They could stand erect on their back legs and
nibble high branches or rest on their front legs and munch plants. If threatened, they
could probably rear up and dash away at great speed.
They had strong tails that provided
balance when they were running on their back legs. Some Anatosaurus remains have been
found with pieces of skin preserved. This is a very unusual find, and scientists have
studied the skin carefully. Anatosaurus skin had a pebbly texture, like the skin of a
lizard.
