Albertosaurus was a carnosaur. Carnosaurs were giant flesh eaters with big heads carrying powerful jaws and huge teeth. They had large bodies with powerful back legs and very short front legs. Albertosaurus had slightly longer front legs than Tyrannosaurus, a close relative.
Many skeletons of Albertosaurus have been found in the western United States and Canada, and in Mongolia. It is one of the most frequently found kinds of dinosaur fossils. For a long time, scientists thought that certain fossil bones discovered in different places were from separate kinds of dinosaurs. Now, they recognize them all as belonging to the Albertosaurus.
Because Albertosaurus was lighter than Tyrannosaurus, it was probably faster. Albertosaurus was about 16 feet tall. It had more teeth than Tyrannosaurus and could slash its way into the flesh of its victims, tearing them to pieces before swallowing them.
