This is a sample 3 day lesson plan for a Latin
class.Educational
Objectives
- learn about gladiator culture
- learn, recognize/translate deponent verbs
- know vocabulary
- derivatives and cognates
Schedule
1st Day -
- Go over the vocabulary with the class.
There are many excellent ways to do this. For starters, try asking the class
what they think the word means. Then ask for derivatives, principal parts,
declension, whether or not it is a cognate, etc.
- Assign grammar points. This is a
good way to see what your class remembers from previous lessons. Go ahead and
discuss the new grammar learned in the section, in this lesson, tell them about the
deponent verb.
- Do some sentences on the board, and then
assign practice patterns for homework. Before the end of class, try to see if the
class can parse the deponent verb by themselves.
2nd Day -
- Review homework from last night and
vocabulary flashcard review. We would like to reccomend making color coded flash
cards. For a change, trying using different colored markers for different types of
words. Like, all the nouns could be written in blue.
- Get a small story, and have the class
translate it. During the story, you can introuce culture into the lesson.
Start off by asking if anyone knows anything about gladiatorial combat, and let the class
discuss.
- For homework have the students finish the
story, and review vocabulary.
3rd Day -
- Review the story. Evaluate.

We would like to reccomend basing most of
the lesson on the vocabulary. So bring certain grammar points as review, and as with
this unit, incorporate new vocabulary terms. In this case, we have the deponent
verb. For the grammar in this lesson, we suggest going over the three cognates, all
the derivatives, and parts of the words (declensoin, principal parts)
Grammatical Points
- Deponent Verb (explanation of meaning and
use)
- Review of passive verbs
Practice
- There are many things you can do here.
For example, you might have 7 students up to the board to practice some grammar.
You could split the class into small groups and have them conjugate verbs.
Also, as a class, try doing a synopsis of a verb. In this lesson, we suggest
doing the deponent verb.
Culture and History
- Here is where the teacher has to make the
call. We suggest that for this section, you give a translation on the topic of
gladiatorial combat. If desired, you can have a story that doesn't have anything to
do with the lesson, but it would take away from the lesson.
