The Mercury Barometer
A mercury barometer can be made by filling a long glass tube with mercury, and then turning it upside down in a bowl of mercury. The column of mercury is held up by the air pressure. As the air pressure varies from day to day (depending on the weather), the height of the mercury varies. If you suck on a straw, the drink moves up for the same reason- atmospheric pressure pushes the liquid up into your mouth.
