Shoemake-Levy was first seen by Gene Shoemaker, his wife Carolyn and his partner, David Levy in 1993. The comet actually boke apart when it pass Jupiter in 1992 and in 1994, when the comet pass Jupiter again, it plunged directly into the atmosphere. The crash of the comet helped scientists to know moe about comets and the history of the solar system. One example was that the moons of Jupiter must have been struck comets in the past.
