The first class passengers on board the Titanic represented the Anglo-American society of the day. The wealthiest person on board Titanic by far was John Jacob Astor. Besides these, the first class passengers on board the Titanic represented the Anglo-American society of the day. Benjamin Guggenheim was also on board. So were Isidor Straus and his wife, Ida. Straus was the owner of Macy's, the world's largest department store. George Widener was a very wealthy man who made his huge fortune building streetcars. The roll call of the rich and famous might have been even more impressive had some prominent people not canceled their tickets. For example, John Pierpont Morgan was too ill to take the trip. Alfred Vanderbvilt and his wife decided at the last moment not to sail. Lord Pirrie, chairman of Harland and Wolff canceled because of poor health. In his place sailed Thomas Andrews, the company's managing director. While the wealthy brought retinues of maids and manservants and lots of luggage, most members of the crew earned such tiny salaries that it would have taken years to save the money for a single deluxe first-class ticket. In fact the Titanic was a kind of floating layer cake. The bottom layer was made up of the most lowly manual laborers toiling away in the heat and grime of the boiler rooms and engine rooms. The next layer consisted of steerage or third-class passengers. After that came the middle classes - teachers, professionals of moderate means - in second class. Then finally, the icing on the cake: the rich and the famous. The ship that carried these passengers was absolutely the last work in floating luxury. The finest were the two first-class suites on B deck. They had a full 50 feet in length and had private promenade decks. First class passengers were decorated in various periods and styles. Many of the public rooms were paneled in wood. There were elevators, gymnasiums, a Turkish bath and swimming pool, and the most lavish Grand Staircase afloat. All of these things gave Titanic a very conspicuous look. Listed below are the first class passengers.
