Starting a Chess Club at your school is fun and can be very rewarding. When I (Jim Martis) started high school, we had no Chess Club. I took the initiative to start a club and have been President for four years. It has been very exciting and was a great way to get people involved. Listed below are the steps I took to get my club off the ground. Hope you have equal success!

Steps to starting a Chess Club.
Step 1
  • Build interest in Chess by introducing friends and classmates to the game.
Step 2
  • Play Games outside of school to pique interest.
Step 3
  • Find a coach to help with the club (A teacher or parent).
Step 4
  • Go to your School Board and fill out the necessary forms for starting a new club.
Step 5
  • Hang posters and flyers around your school announcing a new club.
Step 6
  • Have food and drinks at your meetings (Creates a nice social atmosphere).
Step 7
  • Elect a President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary.
Step 8
  • Hold fundraisers to purchase boards and pieces.
Step 9
  • Go to tournaments in your area and sign up for the USCF if desired.
Step 10
  • Find out which neighboring schools have Chess Clubs and hold local competitions.
Step 11
  • Have fun and meet new friends!
