Habitats
In our world
The humans seem to dominate
But only on 30% of the earth
An area not too great
One might ponder where exactly porifera live.
The general answer to such a question is rather obvious- anywhere
with water. However, as diversified as poriferan species are
so are the aquatic biomes that they inhabit. It is theorized
that 90 to 95 percent of all porifera are marine, or salt water
sponges, inhabiting areas such as oceans and seas. However,
that it inself is quite generalized. Within the ocean community
of porifera, there are caves, coral reefs, abysses, and all
other areas for porifera to inhabit. The remaining minority
of sponges are freshwater. Freshwater sponges may reside within
rivers, lakes, or subterranean areas. Since certain porifera
inhabit certain areas, different types of habitats and locations
need to be discussed. In each area, porifera interact within
the environment and with its other organisms to complement and
enhance natural processes. Such interactions are vital to the
prosperity of the environment. However, some sponges are even
known to have destructive powers upon ecology. Even though they
are thought to be destructive, nevertheless, these are but preservations
of natural balance.
