The plantations were now run and worked by colonist. The VOC also held a monopoly in cinnamon and cloves. There were several (European and Asian) countries trading and transporting pepper. Apart from spices fabrics such as cotton and silk were carried and a small part of the cargo consisted of goods like china, sugar, tin (from Malaysia), copper, salpetre (from Bengal) and perfume (from Japan). In the course of the 18th century cargoes mainly consisted of coffee and tea. |
