he Cargo The cargo from Asia mainly consisted of spices like mace and nutmeg (two products from the same tree), all of which growing on the Banda Islands. The Dutch had agreed that these products would only be supplied to them. This agreement was violated considerably by the Bandans until Jan Pieterszoon Coen put a stop to it. A large part of the population was massacred and those who were not killed were chased into the mountains where most of them starved.

The plantations were now run and worked by colonist. The VOC also held a monopoly in cinnamon and cloves. There were several (European and Asian) countries trading and transporting pepper. Apart from spices fabrics such as cotton and silk were carried and a small part of the cargo consisted of goods like china, sugar, tin (from Malaysia), copper, salpetre (from Bengal) and perfume (from Japan). In the course of the 18th century cargoes mainly consisted of coffee and tea.
