The Halve Maen and Hudson

This ship sailed in 1609 under command of Henry Hudson and this journey was mainly intended to find a new, north-east route to Asia.
The crew members had an eventful journey and they had to change their route because of floating North Pole ice.
Eventually Hudson found a north-west thouroughfare to China sailing the Halve Maen. After a few stopovers on the coast of New Jersey (USA) he set out on a river, which, to his surprise, turned out to be an inland river. Halfway up the river he made a u-turn and sailed back. The river now bears his name: Hudson River.

This journey was profitable to the Dutch as Hudson had claimed the newly discovered area for the Dutch and trading posts bearing the names of Dutch colonists were established in the United States, e.g. New York

The ship, which would gain fame as a discovery ship, has also been rebuilt and can be seen in New York
