There are 72 cards total in every tarot deck.  There are 21 keys, including Justice, Temperance, the Hermit, the Fool, and the Hanged Man, as well as others.  These are called the Major Arcana.  Like in a regular deck of cards, there are four "suits": Pentacles, Swords, Wands and Cups.  All other cards that make up these "suits"(Ace through Ten, then Page, Knight, Queen and King), are known as the Minor Arcana.  These were used in Medieval times by wizards, mages, gypsies, and other believed "mediums."  The reading would begin with the "medium" would place the "significator", or the card that best describes the subject in the center of the table, and the reading would proceed from there, depending on the kind of reading taking place. There are several different kinds of  Tarot Decks, such as Rider-Waite, Egyptian Tarot, Tarot of the Cat People, and many others.
