The Digit Problem

This is an interesting mind-reading trick that you can use to astound and amuse your friends.

Materials

1.) Yourself and two friends

Presentation

1.) Ask the two friends if they will help you.

2.) Tell them that when you turn around, hold up any number of fingers, 1-5.

3.) Tell them to then tell you the total.

4.) You announce how many fingers each is holding.

Secret

The other friend is your assistant.  Before the trick, you two agreed that he or she would hold up two fingers the first time. Then, you would only have to subtract two from the total, and you have the number of fingers the other friend is holding up.  If you want to repeat the trick, the the assistant will hold up the number of fingers the other friend held up last time.

Ex.-

Assistant holds up two fingers.

Friend holds up four fingers.

They say that the total is six.

You say that Friend is holding up four fingers.

Repeat it:

Assistant holds up four fingers.

Friend holds up one finger.

They say that the total is five.

You say that Friend is holding up one finger.
