Sleep Vocabulary


sleep apnea - A condition involving frequently interrupted breathing usually accompanied by heavy snoring and restless sleep; sufferers of this disease can suffocate themselves in their sleep

sleep bruxism (nocturnal teeth grinding) - characterized by the subject grinding or clenching the teeth during sleep

sleep center - control centers in the hypothalamus of the brain, which when stimulating can wake or put subjects to sleep

sleep cycle - A period during sleep composed of a non-REM sleep episode and the subsequent REM sleep episode; each non-REM-REM sleep couplet is equal to one cycle. Any non-REM sleep stage suffices as the non-REM sleep portion of a cycle

sleep debt - the state of chronic fatigue and sleepiness that results from the lack of sufficient sleep or disrupted sleep, particularly over an extended period of time

sleep deprivation - extended periods of insufficient sleep

sleep disorder - an abnormal physical or mental sleep condition

sleep eating - rare form of sleepwalking; the sleep-eater experiences repeated occurrences of eating during sleep

sleep environment - the area, comprised of bedding, lighting, temperature and noise level, in which one sleeps

sleep habit (sleep ritual) - automatic or repeated practices one habitually carries out before going to sleep at night

sleep paralysis - loss of limb function in the body occurring upon entrance into REM sleep

sleep pattern - a person's clock hour schedule of bedtime and arise time as well as nap behavior; may also include time and duration of sleep interruptions

sleep research - investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery and interpretation of sleep

sleep talking - talking or mumbling during sleep without being aware

sleep walking - a series of complex body movements, such as getting out of bed and walking, which occur during Non-REM sleep

snoring - sound made by air pouring through irregular and narrow opening in the throat and windpipe

sound pollution - annoying or harmful noise in an environment

synchronization - the state of recurring or operating at exactly the same periods

transitional stage - short, light stages of sleep, whose only purposes are to transition sleepers into deeper stages of sleep

ultrasound - a technique involving the formation of a two-dimensional image used for the examination and measurement of internal body structures and the detection of bodily abnormalities

vital organs - a differentiated structure, such as a heart, kidney, or lung which performs some specific function vital to maintaining life

white-noise generator - produces an adjustable audible random sound which can be used to acoustically mask a selected environment of sound to make other noise less distracting
