nocturnal - being active at night

norepinephrine - a hormone produced by chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla, which mediates transmission of sympathetic nerve impulses.

NREM (non-REM) - the four stages of sleep during which sleepers do not experience rapid eye movement.

olfactory gland - A type of serous gland in the nasal mucous membrane

physiological - characteristic of or appropriate to an organism's healthy or normal functioning anatomy

PLMD (Periodic Limb Movement Disorder) - the repeated moving or twitching of the outer extremities during sleep

posture - the position of the body, characteristic or assumed for a special purpose

psychological - directed toward the mind specifically in its cognitive function

recurrent dreams - recurrent dreams are dreams which you experience repeatedly over a long period of time, usually years

REM (rapid-eye-movement) - stage of sleep during which the eyes move rapidly, though the eyelids are closed, and brain and physiological activity resembles that observed during wakefulness; dream sleep

rest - to cease from action and refrain from labor or exertion to be free from anxiety or disturbance

RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome) - a movement disorder, which causes abnormal sensations in extremities, usually described as “crawling” or “burning” and gives victims an irresistible urge to move the affected extremity

sensory organs - organs of or relating to sensation or to the senses

serotonin - a compound which plays a role in neurotransmission

SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) - when an infant dies suddenly and without known cause in its sleep
