Arthur James Balfour (1848-1930) was a British statesman. A Conservative, he was in government positions and was Prime Minister from 1902 to 1905. As foreign secretary under Lloyd George (1916-19), he issued the Balfour Declaration (1917), pledging British support for a Jewish national home in Palestine.
Support continued due to the influence of this document. The State of Israel did become a reality years later.
