Edworth
David, Alastair Mackay and Douglas Mawson, from Shackleton’s expedition of
1907-1909, reached the South Magnetic Pole on 15 January 1909, the first to do
so. The plan was simple, they had to walk about 1600 km (1000 mi) to the point
where their compass needle would stand vertically. They had no dogs and ponies
and at the start, they used a motor car, the first motor car brought to
Antarctica. The motor car proved useless on soft surfaces. Totally, they had
travelled 2028 km (2360 mi) without dogs and ponies.
