Heroic Age (1895-1922)

The Heroic Age started when Henryk Bull lead the expedition that made the first confirmed landing on the mainland of Antarctica in January 1895. In July of the same year, the International Geographical Congress, meeting in London, decided to make Antarctica the main target of new exploration. This launched an era of government-sponsored national expeditions. Within a short time, expeditions from Britain, Germany, Sweden and other countries are being organised.

This era had many records broken with man reaching both the South Geographical Pole and Magnetic Pole. Technology is also slowly being used in the expeditions. Countries like Japan makes their first Antarctic expedition. This era has great explorers too such as Robert Scott, Roald Amundsen and Ernest Shackleton.
