Meaning of Games

This text was inspired by books written by Witold Gombrowicz and excellent pictures of Polish artist Zbigniew Lengren that show games among people in a humorous, but also very warm and indulgent way. It is based on Eric Berne’s book “W co graj¹ ludzie. Psychologia stosunków miêdzyludzkich” (Games People Play. The Psychology of Human relationships) that has fallen into my hands while researching for traditional games (board, card games etc.).

Game theory is one of the most interesting psychological theories describing relations between people. Literature has been describing games between characters for centuries and still is. This are the focal point of a majority of books, novels, stories, poems. However, in real life games are played mostly without full consciousness. Polish writer Witold Gombrowicz in his precursory artistic creations showed social games as one of fundamentals of human social behaving. His novel “Ferdydurke”, drama “Iwona ksiê¿niczka Burgunda” (“Iwona princess of Burgund”) and others probably gave foundations for modern psychological Game Theory. In his novels and dramas characters were entangled into different games, often with no consciousness or against their wills.
