The Mayan civilization was a group of Indian tribes speaking related languages. They created a highly developed civilization that existed between about 400 BC and 1500 AD. They developed astronomy, art, monuments, stone architecture, mathematics, hierogliphical writing and had a precize calendar.

400BC-250AD	beginnings of Maya Empire
250AD-400AD	many towns (Tikal, Uaxactún) with monumental structures were founded; they attended administratory and sacral functions
400-700	local political crizises
700-900	regional style in architecture and art developed; apogeum of Maya civilization; toward the end of this period city-countries in the central part of Maya teritority abandoned
900-1200	north part of Yucatan penninsula became strongly influenced by Toltec civilization from the central Mexico, the most important town is Chichén Itzá
1200-1524	Mayapán became the dominant city-country; fights between set at variance aristocratic lines; Spaniards under Pedro de Alvarado conquered this area
1697	last undependent Maya city-country - Tayasal on the Peten Itzá lake was conquered
