Here are a few points to keep in mind when meeting with Defendants and their parents.

1. Emphazize the seriousness of the offense they have committed! Also, be sure to let them know how fortunate they are to have been referred to Teen Court and that when they complete their sentence that they will have NO RECORD.

2. Explain that they will be sent back to Juvenile Court if they do not complete their sentence within 60 days.

3. Collect the $25.00 processing fee if it has not already been paid.

4. Be sure to give them a copy of their sentence after everyone has signed it. Let them know that it is their responsibility to contact their community service supervisor as soon as possible. The community service supervisor is expecting their call.

5. It is also important that the defendants know that they must attend Basic Training WITH A PARENT. It is a MANDATORY part of their sentence, so it cannot be missed. Be sure that they select a date (they will have a choice of two) that will work with their schedule. Also, be sure that this date is written on both copies of the sentence sheet.

6. Be sure that the Defendant and their parents notify Teen Court if there is a change of address or phone number!

7. The signed documents that the Defendant and their parents should have to take with them are:

A copy of the Sentence Acceptance.

A copy of their Sentence with all information filled out and signed.

A copy of the letter of apology for the defendant to use as a guideline to prepare their own letter of apology.

Their stapled Introduction letter for community service. Be sure to put the number of hours on the first sheet.
