The trial below is fictitious; however, it can be used to train volunteers. Using this trial the volunteers, judges, bailiffs, clerks, attorneys, and jurors can practice their roles. Teen Court members can videotape the sessions, so volunteers can evaluate their performance.

Also, it is a good idea to invite journalists to attend the mock sessions. Because of confidentiality rules governing juvenile hearings, it is recommended that they don't attend actual cases.

IN THE MATTER OF:

AMANDA JONES

CHARGES: Three (3) counts of retail theft

The Mock City police were summoned to the Mock City Mall branch store of QMart on July 15, 1996, at 11:20 a.m. regarding a shoplifter. Amanda Jones was arrested at 11:52 a.m. for three (3) counts of retail theft.

A QMart employee noticed Amanda entering the ladies' dressing rooms with a blue short outfit and a swimsuit. Amanda exited the dressing rooms carrying only her purse. After a quick scan of the changing rooms, the attendant, unable to locate the clothes, called security. Amanda was led to the manager's office where she broke down and confessed to putting the items on under her clothing and attempting to leave.

When the police arrived, they asked for identification and discovered a bottle of Spring Musk Perfume bearing a new, undamaged sales sticker. When the officer asked if Amanda had a receipt, she stated she had purchased the perfume but upon further prompting admitted that she had taken this item from Bennett's, a mall department store.

A further search of Amanda's purse was conducted and the officer found two pairs of earrings with sales stickers from Carter's, a mall accessory shop. Amanda admitted to taking these items without purchasing them.

While searching Amanda's purse, the officer located her wallet and found $85 in cash in her possession. When asked why she didn't just pay for the items, Amanda stated she was planning to purchase a clock for her parents' wedding anniversary the following day.

Amanda was questioned as to why she had taken these items and she stated she did not know. Amanda was then transported to the Public Safety Building in Mock City and her parents were called.

When Amanda's parents came, a conference was held between the parents, Amanda, and the arresting officer. During this conference, Amanda stated that all her "girlfriends" did this and they never got caught. She was dared by one to bring certain items to her with the sales tags still intact to prove that she had not paid for them. It was dumb, but she did it, and she was sorry.

ITEMS:

Tank top short set.......$25

Swimsuit.................$38.79

Perfume..................$12

Two pairs of earrings..$32
