Mystery
A dog sat breathing hard above
me. His sweet breath caressed
my cheek slowly bringing me to my senses. What had happened?
I could not remember. All I knew was the sharp pain that
throbbed in my leg.
His tongue tickled at my cheek, and he "ruffed" quietly, nudging me with his nose. It was llike some kind of weird Lassie episode.
"OK, OK." I pushed him away and tried to sit up, but the pain from my leg shot up my spincelike an electric shock.
"Woo!" I eased back down, and the dog shuffled away a couple of steps. As I lay back against the ground, gritting my teeth againt the paint I saw my bike dangling there - a good twenty feet above me, tangled in the shubbery at the edge of a steep brick wall.
As I stared at my bike, I could only think about the last piece of banana cream pie in the fridge at home. Susie would get it for sure now. And it was always better cold - the banas like little slimy bits of popsicle in the rich valilla cream.
I shook my head, banana cream pie? I was dazed, or something - hungry my mind told me - I must have banged my head when I fell.
That's when it came slamming back to me - riding aling the street - thinking about that pie, the dog had trotted out from a side street, and shuffled alongside me for a couple of blocks.
I looked over at him again, he was stretched out on the damp croncrete, with one foot pointed up to the sky, his tongue dangling out of his mouth as he looked around. He ws a small dog, short-haired, with his body loo long, and his legs too short - a mutt, kind of goofy looking.
The dog had followed for a couple of blocks, and then then car pulled out - a black car, tinted windows, it pulled a U-turn in the middle of the street, and came on fast, right for him. The driver's window was rolled down, and I'd heard someone yell - 'There he is!" before the car squealed around, just like ib the movies.
