A new group of people, the Immigrants, are increasing in population in the tropical rainforests. During the past 35 years, millions of people have moved into the tropical rainforests from other ecosystems. For example, in South America, families are migrating into the forests of Columbia, Ecuador, and Peru. In Brazil. the farmers from the eastern coast are moving into the forests of the Amazon.

Indonesian settlers from the crowded islands of Bali and Java are moving into the forests of Sumatra, Sulawesi, Kalimantan and the western half of Papua New Guinea. The Indonesian Government created a special program for clearing rainforests and gave the farmers free tools, land, cama seeds, and free food for the first year to clear the rainforests and drain the swamps. This exploitation of the rainforests has become uncontrollable and the erosion of tropical soils is occuring much faster, destroying the rainforests.

In addition, the immigrants are a threat to the health of tribal peoples as they have introduced chicken pox, measles, influenza, and other deadly diseases. The tribal peoples are easy targets, having never been exposed to other world diseases and vaccines. The immigrants are also threatened by a variety of diseases and accidents: up to half of all newborn babies die before the age of one due to malaria, yellow fever, and other diseases spread by mosquito bites.
