After the discovery of Uranus, astronomers began looking for other planets even farther away. And in 1846 a German astronomer named Johann Galle found one, which was called Neptune. The planet is about the same size as Uranus and, through a telescope, appears bluish in colour.

When the Voyager 2 probe flew past Neptune in 1989, it confirmed that the planet is blue. It also spies dark spots and wisps of white cloud in the atmosphere. The dark spots are thought to be great storms, rather like Jupiter’s Great Red Spot.

Like the other giant planets, Neptune is a great gas ball. It also has a system of rings around its equator. It has at least eight moons, but we van see only two, Nereid and Triton, from the Earth. Triton is a pinkish world covered with frozen gases. It has a temperature of –236 degrees Celsius, and is the coldest place we know in the Solar System.
