The first pulsar was discovered in a very unique way. Every 1.337 seconds, astronomers Jocelyn Susan Bell Burner and Antony Hewish would detect an emission from an unknown source. They named it Source LGM (Little Green Men), because the wondered if it was from aliens. It was later when they discovered that it was a spinning neutron star.
