Hi! I am Megan and I'm 14 years old. I'm in the ninth grade and live in Montgomery County, Maryland.
I am the oldest in my family, with one brother and two sisters. Both my parents have significant hearing losses. We sign at home, Both my parents can communicate with hearing people, through a combination of hearing aids, speechreading, and other means. But deafness is a real factor in our lives. It's something that always affects us. I, too, am gradually losing my hearing, and, unless science gives us a major breakthrough, I may be deaf by the time I'm an adult.
I am building this web site because I want to help hearing people understand more about deaf people and about the deaf world. It's human nature that if you don't understand something, you shun it. Too many hearing people shun deaf people because they don't understand them. Yet the only difference between hearing people and deaf people is that deaf people can't hear. Otherwise we're all the same. I would like to think that, because of our web site, deaf people will be more welcomed in the hearing community and that hearing people will realize the benefits of associating with deaf people.
Hey, we're Chris and Dave. Dave is on the left, Chris is on the right. Dave is 18, and Chris is 17. We're brothers from Kansas. We have both been competing in the ThinkQuest Contest for three years, making this our fourth. Chris dealt with the design of our page and he deigned most of the graphics that were used. Dave did most of the programming involved with the construction of this web page.
