OCCURENCES

South African  diamonds have been reported from all provinces,with the exception of  Kwazulu Natal.The northen province is the most important producers , followed by the Northen Cape, Gauteng ,Free state and North West  Provinces. The Western Cape is a minor producer, with the west coast alluvial and marine deposits extending into the northwestern  corner of the  Provinces.Mpumalanga contains some poorly diamondiferous kimberlites and, in the Eastern Cape, some alluvial  occurrances has been reportet on the south bank of the Orange River near Aliwal North . All of the significant diamonsds regions are mentioned below but, in the interests of brevity, not all deposits are dealt with individualy. Apart from the larger mines, approximately 1500 alluvial diggers of operative in South Africa, each involved with relatively small-scale operations.
