WHEN ARE THIS FOODS EATEN ?
We have three meals a day(breakfast , lunch, supper and in between meals).
Breakfast: Soft porridge is eaten with sugar and milk. Bread is an item which is included regularly at breakfast in all groups or cultures. Eggs and butter are in contrast to traditional customs(butter which they make for themselves) are included in the habitual eating pattern of these groups. The beverages such tea, milk , starch water and mageu. Coffee is not generally consumed. And the is the men`s favourite sorgum beer.
Lunch: At lunch there are no sandwiches which are included. In contrast to whites and coloured`s only in the black groups porridge with meat is consumed at lunch. With the exception of the Northern Sotho other groups usually add potatoes and vegetables are also included at lunch. Lunch is the main meal on Sundays. A meat dish, together with a starch dishes such as rice, potatoes, stamp,maizes porridge or mealie rice are served with variety of vegetables.Dessert is served at the end of the meal, popular dessert which are served are canned fruit such as peaches and guavas which they make themselves.
Supper: Most ethnic groups say that meat, fish or chicken together with a starch dish are consumed at supper. With the exception of the Northern Sotho, all other groups indicate that potatoes and rice and vegetables are included.The Northern Sotho group supper consist only of meat and porridge.The Pedi`s prefer porridge for the main meal. The Zulu`s are the only group which eat fruits at supper.
