| Most of the cable thefts is suspected to be done by
Telkom employees.The company has sent a warning to employees implicated
in these thefts. 83 staff members were dismissed during 1996/97 financial
year and a futher 53 dismised in the period under review.
Stifer sentences have been imposed by magistrates.Guilty suspects are faced with the possibilities of spending several years behind bars |

Calcutta:5 alleged copper thieves were caught with approximately R40 000 worth of copper wires, by a local member of the South African Police Services.The replacement value of the copper wire is estimated at nearly R100 000. Rosslyn: 200 m cable had been stolen. The suspected thief was short after he attacked a Telkom investigations officer with a saw he had been using to cut the cable.All the stolen copper cable was recovered. Ladium & Erasmia: 250 m of underground cable in Ladium , disrupting the services of about 75 customers in the area.Two suspects were arrested by Telkom's investigations team. |
